Our undergraduate program is excellent preparation for careers in industry and the private sector or graduate school. We offer a variety of degree options: Physics B.A., Physics B.S., Applied Physics B.S., and a Physics minor. Our comprehensive graduate program immerses students in exciting research as part of their master's or Ph.D. degree, and includes an APS-sponsored M.S.-to-Ph.D. bridge program.
A breadth of course offerings
Courses in our department cover the underlying laws of nature at every scale—from subatomic particles, to the emergent properties of complex materials, to the forces shaping the structure of the universe. The broad range of physics research conducted at IU is matched by an equally expansive collection of course offerings.
Find support + opportunity
Our world-class faculty foster exploration and innovation, and provide research opportunities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We encourage our students to gain valuable, real-world experience through internships and positions in industry, academia, or national laboratories.
A hub for cutting-edge research
Nationally ranked groups in our department carry out research in particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter physics and material science, biophysics, and accelerator physics. Research activities are channeled via institutes and centers such as the Nuclear Theory Center, the Center for Spacetime Symmetries, the Center for Exploration of Energy and Matter (CEEM), and the Quantum Science and Engineering Center.
