A 300-500 word Statement of Purpose regarding your current goals, plans for your professional career, and reasons for selecting a field of study.

Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your ability to do scholarly work. Letters of recommendation must be submitted through the electronic application. Select three persons who are familiar with your academic abilities and potential and ask each to complete one of the recommendation forms. We suggest that you follow up with your letter writers approximately two weeks after you ask them to write, as admission decisions are often delayed solely due to missing reference letters.

A list stating your teaching, research, and/or industrial experiences; a publications list, if available; and any college or professional honors and awards. You may attach a CV if you like. Be sure to include your name on all attachments.

One copy of the official transcript(s) of all previous college and university work, documenting each course taken and all degrees awarded. Applicants must submit an official transcript from each college and university attended. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. Transcripts should be mailed directly by a registrar to the program to which the application is being sent or given to the applicant by the registrar in a sealed and signed envelope and then submitted to the graduate program by the applicant along with the other application materials.

Your transcripts must show:

  • Graduation from a recognized four-year college, university, or institute of technology.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.

GRE Requirement Waiver: Effective for the Fall 2022 application cycle, submissions of both general and physics subject GRE scores are optional. We impose no minimum score and we will give full consideration to applications without GRE scores. Only official score reports can be used in the admissions process. If you intend to provide scores, please ensure the official scores will be reported to Indiana University prior to the application deadline.

$70 application fee. You will pay this fee at the time you submit your online application. No fee waivers are granted.
