We investigate new materials with exotic properties, make use of innovative technologies based on those materials, and gain an emerging ability to control entangled quantum-mechanical systems.
Our faculty and students engage in research that leads discovery in the many areas, both theoretical and applied. We look at the interactions of many bodies as part of condensed matter and material science, study subatomic particle physics, and apply the tools of physics to biological systems. We examine the behavior of many charged particles as part of accelerator physics, and explore astrophysical systems.
Our comprehensive graduate program immerses students in this exciting research as part of their master's or Ph.D. program. It includes a master's degree in Medical Physics as well as an American Physical Society’s (APS)-sponsored M.S.-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program. We also offer a Ph.D. minor in Scientific Computing.
Undergraduate students find intriguing courses at all levels. Those with a general fascination with topics such as the physics of sound can take classes that shape their understanding of the physical properties of matter. Undergraduate majors choose between a traditional path with an emphasis on theoretical physics or follow our applied physics stream. Either way, they are trained to succeed in any graduate program in the country, join industry, or pursue careers requiring problem-solving and technical skills.
