National Science Foundation Research Experiences

The Physics department and the Center for Exploration of Energy and Matter host a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program during the summer. We typically select around 14 undergraduate physics majors from a pool of about 50 applicants.

Students spend 10 weeks at CEEM or within the Physics department, working on individual research projects with a member of the Physics/CEEM faculty or staff. Several of our REU students are selected to attend the DNP Fall Meeting as part of the Conference Experience for Undergraduates (CEU) program to present a poster about their research work. The Physics/CEEM REU program has over 300 alumni, about one-quarter of whom are female.
