James Calvin Swihart, 90, from Bloomington, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Son of Jack and Louise (Jensen) Swihart, James grew up in Elkhart, Indiana.

A veteran of WWll, he returned to Indiana and attended Purdue University, earning first a bachelor’s degree, then a master’s degree in Chemistry, and later his Ph.D. in Physics. He began his professional career at the IBM research facility in Yorktown Heights, New York, later serving as professor of Physics at U.C.Berkeley, then at Indiana University from 1966 until retiring to emeritus in 1999.
