Base Construction

These are the steps for contructing the base

* Materials *
-A. 1.5” x 1.5” x 36”
-B. 1.5" x 1.5" x 24"
-C. 1.5” x 1.5” x 13.25”
-D. 1" x 1" x 54"
-E. 1” x 1” x 27.75”
-F. 1” x 1” x 22”
-G. 1” x 1” x 20”
-H. 1” x 1” x 11.25”
-I. 1” x 1” x 6”
1. 60 degree corner brace (large)
2. T brace (small)
3. 90 degree corner brace (small)
4. larger L brackets
5. corner braces  (large)
6. corner braces (small)
7. pressure clamp

1.  First, take the A bars and the C bars, make a box with the C's about 3 inches in from the ends.  Bolt them down the with large corner braces.

2.  Next, take the B's and form a triangle with a 60 degree brace on the top and bottom of each bar. It is advantageous for the ones on top to be straight, but the angle of the two beams is more important.  Also, make sure that all of the braces are on the outside of the triangle.

3.  Take the I bar and put it along the four open bolts on the top of the 60 degree braces paralell with the ground.

4.  Take the small corner brackets, and put them on top of the I bar, and take the F bar on top of them  Attach the F bar perpendicular to the I bar.  Attach the pressure clamp on top of F.

5.  Begin construction of the top.  Take the longer D bars and put 3 of the H's with an E bar between one of the sides.  (Look at picture for clarification)

6.  Before tightening the braces on the top and bottom, put on the L brackets.  Attach the G bars to the L brackets on the bottom, then set the top on the G bars and tighten the L brackets.

7.  Finally, take the top portion of the telescope and connect it to the base before the G bars on the side without middle bar.  (Look at picture for clarification)

8.  Since the PMT base is larger than the scintillator plates, you must add an 1/4th in. buffer to where you place the scintillator plates.  We used lewon to complete this task. Epoxy (or rubber cement) the lewon  to the top and bottom beams where the scintillator plates will be placed.  (Look at picture for clarification)
