Cryogenic Solenoid Commissioning

A New Plasma Confinement System A superconducting solenoid with 1.75 T field and 0.24 m warm bore is being readied for service in the radial confinement of non-neutral plasmas. The design calls for 0.1% uniformity in field strength within a working volume of 0.5 m length and 0. 05 m diameter

The following figure (22k jpg file) shows the magnet under test in the field mapping area at IUCF. The red box is a two ton steel enclosure which returns flux. Just visible within the bore are a set of water-cooled transverse field coils for fine control of field direction.
