The difference in rate of flow of heat in various metals may be observed.
Five different 8- mm metal rods 12 cm long, each coated with a temperature-sensitive
paint which changes from yellow to brilliant orange at about 50 degree
C, are mounted vertically in a horizontal metal tube. When stream is passed
through the tube, heat flows up each rod at a rate dependent upon its thermal
conductivity, causing the 50 degree C temperature point to move gradually
upward, as evidenced by the change of color. The height which the color
change point has reached is approximately proportional to the thermal conductivity
of the particular metal. The rods are placed in order of decreasing conductivity.
The conductometer requires the steam generator. |
