| A9-7 | Center of mass, weight of a broom. |
| Purpose: | To demonstrate how one can determine the weight of a broom by finding the center of mass for two cases. |
| Description: | The position of the center of mass of a broom is found by balancing the broom on a narrow support (a finger or knife edge). The point of support is then marked with tape or chalk on the broom handle. The broom is rebalanced with a kilogram weight hanging on the handle. The distance, L1, from the new support to the center of gravity of the broom alone and the distance, L2, from the new support to the kilogram weight are both measured. The weight of the broom is calculated by equating torques. |
